last memoirs of a spacechild
i was born
so they say
i will die
so they say
but then who really cares
they care
so they say
i certainly do not
why should i
one is supposed to
so they say
two people call themselves my parents
so they say
they look like everybody else to me
but i do not give a care
they care
so they say
a young girl told me of her love
i asked her who she was
she did not know
she did not care
i did
so i said
one day
all alone
with a peopled world
i asked myself
who i was
i cared
so i said
i dreamt one day
a girl came to me
tan & beautiful
innocently barefooted
with flowers in her hair
i spoke to her of love & truth
she cared
so she said
lying in bed on planet mars
the devil strolled in
i was busy talking to a dying man
i was badly mannered
he was busy dying
so they said
they locked me in a room
i wrote upon the walls
they washed away my words
they did not care
so they said
they decided i was dangerous & let me out
i told them i was christ
they did not care
i told them i did not care
they did not believe me
so they said
i found a friend
he talked of cars & i talked of girls
we liked each other
we had no friends
we were lonely
i discovered he did not understand me
nor i him
i told him i must go
i cared
so i said
a girl asked me to bed
she asked me if i loved her
i told her i did
so i said
she believed me
so she said
a kid asked me if i would like to get high
i said why not
he asked how high i was
i did not care
he cared
so he said
i told some people
i was a retired army colonel
currently tracking down pink elephants
in the everglades
they believed me
so they said
a young lad
spoke to me of love & beauty
with dreamy eyes
i told him i had nothing to offer
i cared for him
he cared
so he said
entering a pizza parlor
two gods and i
eating pizza and admiring girls
enveloped in eternity
we looked out upon infinity
talking little
saying much
i cared
they asked for friendship
i believed them
alone
i opened the door
to the outside
i met a girl
walking the streets
i asked her to be my friend
i gazed into her eyes
as i cautiously
awaited her reply
